The 1916 Rising had left Dublin in ruins. All over Ireland, that brief spasm of violence had resulted in the formation of IRA units. In 1917 the Carlow Brigade of the IRA was formed. Their brief encompassed the farm at Killeshin in Laois where my Nana grew up. Her father Big Jim was a Fenian in his youth and had actively participated in the Irish Land War 1879-82, so it was not surprising when her three brothers all volunteered for the Republicans. Nationalist sympathies held sway in her home.
